Charles Lockhart

Charles Lockhart teaches in the areas of comparative democratic systems, normative political theory, and public policies of relevance to an aging population.  His research interests have included the areas of comparative political culture, comparative public social policy, and the aforementioned distributive justice.  He is currently engaged in a collaborative research project with Professor Jean Giles-Sims (Sociology, TCU) on the relative “elderly friendliness” of the American states.  His current and recent books are:  Aging Across the United States: Matching Needs to States’ Differing Opportunities and Services with Jean Giles-Sims (University Park: Penn State University Press, forthcoming); The Roots of American Exceptionalism: Institutions, Culture and Policies (New York: Palgrave St. Martin’s, 2003);  American Political Scientists: A Dictionary 2nd ed., with Glenn Utter (Westport CT: Greenwood 2002); Protecting the Elderly: How Culture Shapes Social Policy (University Park: Penn State University Press, 2001); and Culture and Politics: A Reader, with Lane Crothers (New York: St. Martin’s, 2000).
